    The Meaning of Thanksgiving

    The Thanksgiving holiday is uniquely American, although a form of thanksgiving is celebrated in Canada, some Caribbean islands and Liberia on various dates.  The holiday was started by the Pilgrims in the Plymouth, Massachusetts, colony in 1621 as a three-day festival celebrating the harvest and the safe passage from Europe to the New World. Sarah Joespha Hale, a magazine editor who is most famous for writing the children’s poem “Mary Had a Little Lamb”, waged a 40-year campaign to have Thanksgiving declared a national holiday.  George Washington declared the first official Thanksgiving, but it was Abraham Lincoln who made the last Thursday in November the official date for the celebration. …

    God Isn’td Happy with the United States.

    It seems highly probable that God is expressing His dissatisfaction with this country and the way it’s progressing, especially since World War Two.  And this year He has stepped up His warnings to us.  I haven’t heard a voice from God telling me this, and there is no specific reference to the United States in the Bible.  However, God has chastised countries since He chastised Adam and Eve.  Mostly it has been the Hebrews.  He caused them to spend 40 years in the dessert, when they could have easily crossed to the promised land in two weeks, because of their lack of faith in His guidance.  He took care of…

    Understanding Guilt

    Guilt feelings are a part of all our lives. They’re part of the human experience.  Some guilt is harmful and has no place in our lives, and some is beneficial.  The problem is in distinguishing between the harmful and the helpful.  This is especially problematic because the harmful guilt feelings that have no place in our lives are the strongest.  The first job, then, is to define the various forms of guilt and decide if you need them or not.
