Psalm One has always been one of my favorites, if not my favorite psalm. There is so much promise in it, although the promise is conditional. To make it easy for those not familiar with the psalm, or who don’t remember it too well, I’m quoting it here from the New King James Version:
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful; But his delight is in the law of the Lord., and in His law he meditates day and night. He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth fruit in its season, whose leaf also shall not wither, and whatever he does shall prosper. The ungodly are not so, but are like the chaff which the wind drives away. Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgement, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous. For the Lord knows the way of the righteous, but the way of the ungodly shall perish.
Blessed means for you the deep-seated joy coming from the redemptive grace of God. The quality of the blessed is noted prominently here. He follows God’s laws with joy, not a sense of duty. He wants to follow God’s word in the Bible because as truly saved it is his nature to do so. The person, man or woman, delights in the word. Apple trees bear only apples, cherry trees only cherries and lemon trees only lemons. That is because of their make up. They can’t do anything other than what their makeup has them do. So it is with true Christians. They follow God’s word because it is their new nature in Christ to do so. Old things are passed away, all things become new.
A true Christian is like a river of water. Have you ever noticed how in arid land grass, trees and other plants flourish along river banks? That is because not only of the water that seeps into the bank, but also due to the nutrients deposited by the river. It provides everything the pants and trees need to grow strong. I used to ride a motorcycle. It was the only transportation I owned. Riding out across the Texas landscape at night I could tell when I came close to a large stream or river because the temperature would drop about five degrees. I didn’t need to see the water because I could feel its effect some distance away. True Christians are like that. Everything around them feels the cooling, calming nurture coming from them. It’s not anything a person can develop or get from a guru or doctor. No program advertised on TV can provide you with this quality. It is given by God as a quality inherent in the new nature of Christians who live in Christ as a part of God’s adopted family. You in Him and He in you.
The ungodly-those who have not accepted Christ as their Savior- do not have this joy and the quality others notice. Salvation is a gift. But a gift is not yours if you don’t accept it. It only becomes yours if you accept it. Imagine someone giving you a five million dollar home, taxes, utilities and up keep paid forever. You would never have to spend a cent on the home. It is the most beautiful home you have ever seen, exactly as you have dreamed of. Would you say no thanks, I don’t want it and walk away? Would you reject the home if it was freezing cold outside and you were homeless? That would be pretty stupid, wouldn’t it? Who could resist such an offer?
Many people do reject such an offer every day. In heaven God has many such homes. If you truly accept Jesus as Savior, the Father puts your name on the mailbox out in front of one of those homes. It’s yours forever. nothing or no one can take it away from you.
God’s blessing will be yours in this world as well if you accept Christ. He will help you through your troubles. He won’t take the troubles away or guide you around them. He will give you the capacity to work through your troubles: “In the world you will have tribulation. But be of good cheer, I have overcome the world”. And so will you in Christ.
However, those people who reject the gift of salvation have no help from God. They’re on their own. They may prosper in this world to an extent, but they don’t have the nurturing from God, nor do those around them sense a blessing from them that elevates those close to them. If troubles befall them-and many powerful people in high places are having serious troubles bring them down now-they have no heavenly help- they will suffer the consequences of trying to get through this world on their own. Most importantly, the cannot get out of this world alive as Christians do. John 3:16 says the Father sent Jesus into the world so that whoever accepts Him will have ever lasting life.
So, if you are not a Christian, or not truly a Christian, aren’t you being silly? Why would you reject such a gift? Why would you reject that home and blessing in this world? Now is the time of salvation. Right now is the time to accept Christ. Do it right this minute.
